NEW SOUTH WALES, Australia — Learning a new skill is hard. The hours of work and the inevitable setbacks and failures can take their toll on your self-esteem and, in some cases, your body.

While learning a new skill is tough, it can be arguably tougher on kids, who in many instances may still be perfecting normal motor skills.

And maybe that’s what makes watching 9-year-old Sabre Norris tenaciously work to learn a skateboard trick incredibly impressive.

Sabre told The Berrics on their YouTube channel that she “wasn’t allowed to get a bike because we didn’t have a garage.” Instead her mother bought Sabre a more storable skateboard when she was about 6 years old, and she she’s been skating ever since.

After Sabre watched pro skater Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins Pastrana perform the 540 trick on the Internet, Sabre decided that was just the trick she wanted to learn. A 540 consists of “simply” turning 1 ½ times on a skateboard while airborne.

The video shows only a few of Sabre’s failures, but she said she landed the trick on precisely her 75th try that day, which was caught on video.

“Every time I tried one and didn’t land it, I put a rock on the table. It ended up being my 75th rock,” she said.

Sabre said she was “frothing” after she landed the trick — which included a joyous squeal — but she wisely understands that landing the trick once is not enough. Her goal is to land 100 540s by Saturday. No word on her progress, but I have no doubt she will achieve her goal.

“I still can’t ride a bike,” Sabre said, “but I can do a 540.”
