SALT LAKE CITY — Police have arrested a man who was wanted in connection with a carjacking in which a woman’s van was stolen last week while her toddler was still inside.

Derek Orr, 29, was arrested early Thursday morning after a standoff involving a SWAT team, according to a tweet from Salt Lake police. After several hours, Orr was arrested without incident, according to Salt Lake Police detective Greg Wilking.

He was booked for investigation of robbery and for several warrants in separate cases, according to Wilking.

The carjacking incident took place about 1:16 p.m. May 16 near the intersection of 2100 South and Green Street, which is between 600 East and 700 East, according to police.

A man approached a woman who was trying to make a U-turn at Green street, police said. He pulled her out of her van and then drove west away from the area, while the woman’s 3-year-old girl was still in the vehicle, according to police.

Police don’t know why the man took the car.

The girl was found about half an hour later near 950 S. West Temple. She was unharmed and was reunited with her mother, police said.

Investigators located the Honda Odyssey van earlier this week at the Wells Fargo Bank at 300 S. 1300 East.

Police previously identified Orr as a person of interest in the case. However, Wilking said he was arrested Thursday for investigation of the Odyssey van robbery.

Further details about Orr’s arrest were not immediately available Thursday.
