WEST VALLEY CITY — A wild chase between police and a couple in a stolen car occurred in West Valley City early Thursday morning.

West Valley Police police say the vehicle used in the chase was stolen from a dealership. The couple took it for a test drive and never returned it.

The chase started just before 2 a.m. and an officer got caught up in a game of cat and mouse with the vehicle trying to stop it.

The vehicle finally stopped near 2200 West and 3100 South coming out of an apartment complex. When the officer approached the vehicle, the driver allegedly tried to hit the officer.

"The driver of the vehicle... revved the engine, came towards the officer, and (the officer) actually had to jump out of the way and back into his car and pull his door shut," said Lt. Matt Elson from the West Valley City Police department.

A chase then ensued, eventually going east on the 201. Another officer laid spikes, which the vehicle hit, but it continued going.

It eventually got off at 3200 West and hit several islands in the road as it tried to get back on 201. Eventually the car crashed on the on-ramp.

"Both of them got out and ran into the swampy area, we had a lot of officers in the area and were getting ready to go for a K-9 search when they surrendered," Elson said

Elson says the couple is headed to jail. They will be booked for auto theft, possession of a stolen car and fleeing. They could also face charges for trying to hit the officer.

Police say they still don't have IDs on these two people because they're giving false info. They should know more once they're fingerprinted at the jail.

Police did find a gun in the car, but it's unknown who it belongs to.
