SALT LAKE CITY — With the massive success of Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy, and Earth’s mightiest heroes (“The Avengers”) bringing in over a billion dollars to Disney, studios are scrambling to find their own superhero or super heroic team to shower them with similar returns.
For the summer of 2013, it's Superman, a third Iron Man, and the entire X-Men ensemble lining up to ask for your money.
Man of Steel Trailer
For months, we’ve been seeing the beautifully shot, though not altogether informative, teasers for Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan’s “Man of Steel.” On Tuesday, a complete trailer highlighting the characters, story and scope of the next Superman movie found its way to the Internet.
“I am seriously emotional now ... Thank you Zack, Henry, and Chris for making this film the way it should be made,” one Latino-Review reader said after seeing the video.
Beginning with shots of a collapsing Krypton, Jor-El (Russell Crowe) discusses with his wife Lara (Ayelet Zurer) how Earth will reject their son.
“They will kill him,” Lara says. “How?” Jor-El asks in reply.
The trailer goes on to show Clark Kent in different stages of his life searching for the man he means to be, while also highlighting the destructive threat that is General Zod (Michael Shannon).
DC and Warner Brothers have a lot riding on the success of this film and if the latest trailer is anything to go by, “Man of Steel” may be to DC what “Iron Man” was to Marvel.
Robert Downey Jr May be Hanging Up his Miniature Arch Reactor
Speaking of “Iron Man,” Chris Heath of GQ magazine had a sit-down with Robert Downey Jr., where they discussed life, art and the uncertain future of Tony Stark. In the article, Heath asks Downey, “So what stops at 50? Superheroes?” A question driven by the fact that Downey is now 47.
"I don't know. I don't know,” Downey replies, Right now I don't have a contract to do anything, and I did for the last five years."
Downey also discusses an injury he sustained while shooting “Iron Man 3.” "It got me thinking about how big the message from your cosmic sponsor needs to be before you pick it up. How many genre movies can I do? How many follow-ups to a successful follow-up are actually fun?”
Downey further explains in the article that he has several projects lined up, that he’d like to work with his wife more, and a Pinocchio idea he pitched to Warner Brothers.
While it might seem impossible for fans to imagine another actor in the iron suit created by Tony Stark, Downey seems to have come to terms with it. Whatever he decides after “Iron Man 3,” there’s no question that the Marvel/Downey relationship has been lucrative for everyone involved.
The casting line-up of “Days of Future Past” is getting out of hand. No doubt, following The Avengers philosophy of more is better, the next X-Men movie has pretty much every major player from the past four X-Men movies, including a very pregnant Halle Berry.
Fans of the series are thrilled to see Bryan Singer returning to the franchise he made famous, but considering the director’s lackluster record as of late, marketing for the next picture is going to be crucial.
As of now, “Future Past” includes Berry, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Ellen Page, Anna Paquin, Patrick Stewart, Shawn Ashmore and Nicholas Hoult, to name a few.
