WEST VALLEY CITY — A motorcyclist is in critical condition after being tossed into the back of a moving pickup truck when he allegedly crashed a stolen motorcycle into it while driving drunk.
A witness said he saw the man driving recklessly on a Honda motorcycle at about 1 a.m. on SR-201. They later saw the motorcycle lying in the road with crash debris strewn around, but no driver could be found. The witness then called the Utah Highway Patrol, according to Trooper Jalaine Hawkes.
Troopers searched the area for the driver without success.
Later, a man driving a Chevy pickup truck found the motorcycle driver in the his truck bed when he pulled into a Sapp Brothers gas station off of I-215 and California Ave.
The man was critically injured, having sustained broken arms and head injuries, though he was wearing a helmet, Hawkes said.
The man was quickly transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Troopers determined after an investigation that the motorcycle collided with the rear of the Chevy pickup while traveling east on SR-201. The man was tossed into the bed of the truck.
Because the collision was relatively low-impact and possibly because of the driver's age, the pickup driver never noticed the motorcyclist, Hawkes said.
Troopers said the man was driving under the influence of alcohol aboard the allegedly stolen motorcycle. Hawkes said he will be investigated for driving under the influence and driving a stolen vehicle.
