SUMMERVILLE, Oklahoma — Apparently you’re gonna call Finn Wolfhard and Paul Rudd.
That’s who’s starring in the upcoming movie “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” a sequel to the 1984 original, due out in theaters next year. The first trailer for the new film debuted online on Monday morning.
Inferring from a remark Rudd’s character says in the trailer, the new movie takes place some 30 years after the original. It will ignore the 2016 “Ghostbusters” reboot, instead acting as a direct sequel to the 1984 “Ghostbusters” and 1989’s “Ghostbusters II,” according to Vanity Fair.
The 2016 reboot, which starred Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Kristen Wiig, was an entirely new story that took place in a different cinematic universe than the 1980s movies. Sony Pictures will be hoping for a rebound with “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” following the 2016 reboot, which lost an estimated $70 million at the box office.
Wolfhard and Rudd star alongside Carrie Coon and McKenna Grace in the film, which is scheduled to debut July 10. Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd also will reprise their roles as Dr. Peter Venkman and Dr. Raymond Stantz, respectively, according to IMDB.
In the film, a woman and her two children move to the tiny town of Summerville, Oklahoma, after the woman’s father left the family a piece of property.
Rudd’s character, named Mr. Grooberson, remarks that there hasn’t been a ghost sighting for decades. But if the trailer is any indication, things start to get weird in Summerville after the family arrives.
Wolfhard and a friend are sitting on an old piece of farming equipment when a ghostly green wisp erupts from its depths. Then, Summerville starts shaking, even though Mr. Grooberson says it’s nowhere near any fault lines or fracking operations or even any speakers playing loud music.
Wolfhard discovers a vehicle that appears to be the Ectomobile from the original films. Grace then discovers a ghost trap that also looks very similar to those used in the original film. The trailer concludes with the two on an Ectomobile joyride firing ghost-laser blasts at a supernatural being of some sort.
“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” is directed by Jason Reitman, the son of Ivan Reitman, who directed the 1984 “Ghostbusters” and “Ghostbusters II.” Jason Reitman previously directed films such as “Juno” and “Up In The Air.”
