WEST VALLEY CITY — The 2018 racing season will be the 50th and final season to be held at Rocky Mountain Raceways.
The venue, which includes an award-winning NHRA-sanctioned drag strip, a 3/8th mile oval and brand new motocross track, will close in October of 2018, Spencer Young Sr., CEO of the Young Automotive Group said.
The 50-acre property was purchased, and will soon be turned into an industrial park.
“We’ve invested a great deal in the racing community, and we aren’t walking away from that,” Young said in a news release. “We will continue to sponsor racers and support racing.”
Bonneville Raceways officially opened its gates in 1968 on the current site of Rocky Mountain Raceway. The Young Automotive Group bought the property — then called Bonneville Raceways — in 1996. The release also said the company looked at several options to save the track, including buying new property as well as contacting West Valley City and the Utah Sports Commission, but none of those options turned out to be viable.
“I feel very proud of the last 22 years, and what we’ve built and the historic racing and family memories we’ve made,” Young said. “We invite you to come out and celebrate with us during this final season.”
RMR has plans for a full season in 2018 with 140 events scheduled.
