SALT LAKE CITY — A volunteer assistant debate coach with the Salt Lake City School District has been arrested and accused of engaging in sexual activity with a student.
Henry Steven Olson, 23, of Taylorsville, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Tuesday for investigation of four counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor.
The activity happened within the last two years, said Salt Lake police detective Greg Wilking. The alleged victim was 15 at the time and Olson was 21.
“This sexual relationship lasted approximately five months, with several sexual encounters in that time,” a police affidavit states.
Olson is listed on the school district’s website as a volunteer debate coach for East High School.
East High Principal Greg Maughn sent a letter to parents Wednesday informing them of the situation. In the letter, Maughn refers to Olson as a “former” coach, stating he was with the debate team from August 2017 through February, acting as the temporary head debate coach from Sept. 10, 2018, to Oct. 29, 2018.
The letter says the alleged victim is an East High student.
“These allegations are deeply unsettling, and we understand that you and/or your student may have concerns or questions. We strongly encourage any students, staff, or faculty members who might be in need of support to reach out to me or to one of our administrators as soon as possible to be connected with one of our district crisis counselors, or to connect confidentially with a counselor via the SafeUT mobile app,” Maughn wrote.
