HERRIMAN — A 20-year-old woman is in critical condition after she was struck by a car in Herriman Monday morning, officials said.

The woman was crossing 11800 South at 4805 West on her way home from work when she was hit by the car about 7:15 a.m. The male driver was heading eastbound and didn't see the woman, Herriman Police Sgt. Greg Shaver said.

Police believe the woman was in the crosswalk when she crossed the street but are unsure if the crosswalk lights were flashing at the time. Investigators do not believe the driver was impaired in any way, Shaver said. The driver is cooperating with police, he added.

"It's on all drivers to be aware of pedestrians, especially during winter," Shaver said. "It's dark outside. It rained last night. We have some trace of snow in areas. It's slick. We should always be taking precautions and looking in all directions for hazards while you drive."

The woman was transported to the Intermountain Medical Center in Murray and taken to surgery. She was able to speak with investigators in the hospital, and Shaver said he believes she will survive.

Eastbound lanes of 11800 South were closed between Grandville Avenue and Oakmond Road while police investigated. The road marks the border between Herriman and South Jordan.
