OGDEN — A Washington Terrace man who helped babysit a young girl has been charged with sexually abusing her.

John D. Ball, 71, was charged Monday in 2nd District Court with aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony.

In September, an 8-year-old girl reported to the Utah Division of Child and Family Services that a man who helped babysit her would make her sit on his lap and inappropriately touch her, according to charging documents.

“The victim disclosed that John’s wife would tell him not to do that because he could go to jail for it,” the charges state.

When interviewed by police, Ball told detectives he knew what he was doing was wrong, but claimed he liked to make the girl happy, according to the charges.

An initial court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 30.
