COVE FORT, Millard County — Southbound lanes of I-15 were temporarily closed Wednesday morning three miles north of Cove Fort, Millard County, after a semitruck hauling sodium bisulfite caught on fire, officials said.
Emergency crews responded to a report of a vehicle fire after a semitruck pulling a tanker and a pup trailer caught fire as it was climbing a hill on the freeway shortly after 7:45 a.m., Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Nick Street said.
The driver was able to escape the cab without injury, Street said.
Video sent to KSL showed the cab fully engulfed in flames with crews on scene attempting to put out the fire.
Since the truck was hauling chemicals, the highway was closed within a half-mile radius of the fire, Street said. He added that a hazmat team from Richfield and the Utah Department of Transportation were notified of the fire.
The fire closed I-15 southbound lanes for more than an hour. One lane reopened just before 9:45 a.m. The scene wasn't fully cleared until Wednesday afternoon when the second lane reopened.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
