HOLLYWOOD — Spider-Man will remain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after all — at least for one more film.
After a very public dispute between Disney, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, the three studios have struck a deal that will see at least one more Marvel-produced Sony “Spider-Man” movie, according to a Friday news report from the Hollywood Reporter.
The new movie is due out in July 2021 and will feature current spidey actor Tom Holland in the titular role, according to the report.
Sony owns the rights to the Spider-Man character and has since 1985. In 2015, the studio entered into a partnership with Disney and Marvel that allowed the character to be used in Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.
The character has since become an integral part of the Marvel world. Holland’s version of the sarcastic superhero has acted as protégé to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark in movies such as “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Avengers: Infinity War.”
However, earlier this year, the Disney-Marvel-Sony deal was thought to be in jeopardy as the studios struggled to agree on a future deal for the character. “Spider-Man: Far From Home” became the highest-grossing film ever for Sony after it was released in July.
Sony also released “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” — an independent, animated spidey story — last year to widespread critical acclaim and box office success.
Friday, it was revealed that Kevin Feige, the producer behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will produce the new Sony “Spider-Man” film.
"I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” Feige said in the Hollywood Reporter article.
Feige added that “you never know what surprises the future might hold” as Sony continues to develop its own “Spider-Man” universe.
