THE INTERNET — Everyone loves a talking parrot no matter what they’re saying.
Yes, some parrots have ... colorful language, by human standards. But the fact that many birds can “talk like humans” will always be an anthropomorphic delight.
Because of that delight, Indian ringneck parrots seem to be having a moment on the internet right now. A couple of weeks ago, we brought you a video of Gabe and Fabio, two ringnecks who had an intense discussion about kisses.
This time it’s Oscar’s turn to shine, and he’s shining to the tune of over 19 million views on Aww Animal’s Facebook page (full disclosure — at least 1,000 of those views are from me.)
There’s a reason why Oscar has gone viral over the last few days, and they are as follows:
- Oscar is saying “peekaboo,” which is a game we associate with sweet babies, so our collective automatic reaction is “aww.”
- Oscar actually hides under a windowpane before popping up to say “peekaboo” with his playmate — how cute is that?
- Oscar’s playmate is the neighbor’s cat, which makes it all feel like a cartoon in the ilk of “Tom and Jerry” or the Roadrunner bits from “Looney Tunes.”
- The video is 13 seconds long.
You can enjoy more of Oscar the ringneck and Poppy the galah at their home in New Zealand on Instagram.
