THE TRACK — There is a reason only 1 percent of the population has run a marathon: because it's incredibly hard. Running for 26.2 miles as fast as you can? That sounds like insanity.
Great runners often manage to finish marathons in under three hours. A lot of novice runners set goals to finish in under four or five hours.
Runner Eliud Kipchoge, however, is the marathon world record-holder and he finished in two hours, 1 minute and 39 seconds at the 2018 Berlin Marathon. If you're wondering, that is incredibly fast.
In order to finish a marathon that fast, you need to cover over 656 feet every 34 seconds, which equates to 13 miles per hour. That means Kipchoge ran 13 miles per hour for 2 hours straight. Think you could keep up? Well, these people tried.
Yesterday's Have You Seen This?
This video shows off a massive treadmill known as the "Tumbleator" when it was visiting the Chicago Marathon expo last month.
The big treadmill gets up to 13 mph, and runners see how long they can keep up with Kipchoge. Needless to say, most people couldn't do it for very long and many were grateful the Tumbleator had a soft landing.
If you'd like to give the Tumbleator a shot, you can head to the 2019 Boston Marathon expo and see how you compare to Kipchoge. But if you decide to do that, start training now so you can at least not fall down while you try.
