SALEM — About 100 homes in Salem were affected by flooding that started around 3 p.m. Wednesday in what Salem City Police Sgt. Greg Smith called a once-in-a-century storm.
“We’re calling it the hundred-year storm,” Smith said. “It’s something I’ve never seen before as I was responding up here to the scene.”
Most of the damage was to homes in the southeast part of town, with a few damaged on the west side of Salem. Most homes sustained minor to moderate damage.
One woman was cut by glass when a window shattered in her home, but her injuries were minor, Smith said.
The High Line and Salem canals in town were overwhelmed by heavy rainfall this afternoon and the canals overflowed into the streets.
Flood cleanup is ongoing in the city, but there is still standing water on some roads, including Salem Canal Road.
"We’re drying up pretty well right now," Smith said.
