KANAB — Officials in Kane County are issuing warnings and calling for volunteers to fill sandbags after a sudden, heavy rainfall Sunday evening caused flooding.
The Kane County Sheriff's Office asked on social media for volunteers to come prepare sandbags at the community pool, sharing a warning from the National Weather Service.
According to the warning, at least an inch of rain fell on Kanab, in addition to 2 inches that fell in surrounding areas, between about 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
The warning was put in effect until 11:15 p.m., cautioning against potential flash flooding in southwestern Kane County, specifically the town of Kanab, and surrounding washes and drainages.
"A flash flood warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. If you are in the warned area move to higher ground immediately. Residents living along streams and creeks should take immediate precautions to protect life and property," the National Weather Service indicated in the warning.
The National Weather Service reminded those in the area that most flash flooding deaths occur in vehicles, urging drivers who encounter flooded roads not to attempt to drive through them. The service also noted that flash flooding is a concern even in areas where no rain has fallen.
