SALT LAKE CITY — An elementary school principal who was placed on leave as police investigated a report of misconduct involving a student has decided to retire, Salt Lake City School District officials said Tuesday.

Laurie Lacy, who was the principal of Edison Elementary, had been placed on leave earlier this month during the investigation.

Salt Lake City School District spokesman Jason Olsen said in an email that Lacy decided to retire and will not be returning to the school. He would not comment further, including about whether the decision was a result of the investigation.

Salt Lake police detective Greg Wilking said on April 18 that the incident being investigated was believed to be isolated, and involved a report of misconduct against Lacy.

Wilking said that the Division of Child and Family Services contacted Salt Lake police on April 12 accusing Lacy of misconduct.

Salt Lake police said Wednesday that the case remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.

Edison Elementary assistant principal Carolyn Synan, who had taken over day-to-day operations of the school, will continue to serve in those duties until a permanent replacement can be found, Olsen said.
