CACHE COUNTY — Thirteen students from Mountain Crest and Logan High School were charged in connection with throwing eggs at homes and vehicles in Cache County, officials said.
For several months, the Cache County Sheriff’s Office received multiple reports of homes and vehicles in Providence, Nibley and Wellsville that had been damaged by eggs, the sheriff’s office said. At least 15 people were victims of the vandalism and the sheriff’s office estimated the damage at more than $2,000.
Cache County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Matt Bilodeau said even though to some people, egging homes may seem like a harmless juvenile prank, making arrests and filing charges was necessary.
"It's to get their attention, make them accountable, and they have to pay restitution on this. Some of these (eggings) are vehicles, and when you get that high protein content sitting on a paint job for a certain amount of time before it's found, it will discolor or ruin that paint and actually cause it to peel," he said.
After an extensive investigation by deputies and school resource officers, 13 juveniles, ages 15 to 17, were arrested and charged with misdemeanor criminal mischief in the First District Juvenile Court.
Students bragging at school and rumors being spread by other teens helped deputies round up the teens involved in the vandalism, Bilodeau said. Investigators also went to stores in the area of the eggings and watched surveillance video and observed groups of teens buying nothing but eggs an hour or two before they were allegedly thrown at homes.
One juvenile was also charged in connection with throwing a rock through the window of an RV, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies are still investigating similar incidents reported in River Heights, Millville and Logan and are working with local businesses that sell eggs.
