FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Matt Bevin has accepted Kentucky's Republican nomination for governor, setting up an election with Democratic Attorney General Jack Conway in a closely-watched campaign one year before the presidential election.
Bevin accepted the nomination after state Agriculture Commissioner James Comer conceded the race Friday morning. On Thursday, a recanvassing of the May 19 primary results confirmed Bevin defeated Comer by 83 votes in one of the closest elections in state history.
U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell quickly endorsed Bevin by name in a one-sentence news release. But Democrats were quick to pounce on their prior relationship, strained by Bevin's 2014 primary challenge for McConnell's Senate seat. Bevin called that criticism "gibberish" and said he is running a campaign about issues.
The election is Nov. 3.
