PLAIN CITY, Weber County — A Weber County man aimed to avoid being linked to a stolen truck Thursday morning by calling in a false school threat to distract emergency responders, authorities say.

Kevin Powers, 28, was arrested and booked into the Weber County Jail for investigation of receiving or transferring a stolen vehicle, falsifying an emergency report and obstruction of justice, Weber County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Matt Jensen said in a news release.

About 7:15 a.m. Thursday, a sheriff’s sergeant located a stolen truck near 4500 W. 1600 North in Plain City, according to Jensen.

While the sergeant was there, someone called Weber County emergency dispatchers and said there was a man walking toward Fremont High School with a rifle, Jensen said.

The sergeant who was investigating the stolen vehicle was a block away from the school and responded there within seconds, Jensen said. Other sheriff’s deputies arrived, and the school was placed on lockout mode as a precaution, he said.

However, deputies did not find a man with a rifle, and it appears the report was false, Jensen said.

The sergeant went back to where he was previously, but the stolen truck was gone, according to Jensen. Sheriff’s deputies later found the truck abandoned a few miles away.

Powers was later arrested at his home, Jensen said.

Powers told investigators that he called in the false report “because he knew it would get an emergency response and he did not want to be linked to the stolen truck,” Jensen said in the news release.
