PROVO — The BYU Cougars beat the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets easily in their homecoming game, but what started out as a fun and exciting game for Cougar fans, quickly turned into a wait-out-the-clock situation in the second half.

The Cougars seemed to be in control the whole way through their 38-20 victory. That confidence came early when Cody Hoffman pulled down one of the best touchdown catches in his career.

‪"#SCtop10? Even w/ defender draped on him ‪#BYU's Cody Hoffman pulls in this 45yd TD," tweeted @ESPNCFB.

"If Cody Hoffman is going to play like this with Honor on the back of his jersey, keep the unis," tweeted @Mitch_Harper. "That honored BYU's prolific passing attack."

That actually marked the first TD for Hoffman on the season and quickly put BYU up seven. Georgia Tech, however, decided to air out the ball some and moved the ball on the Cougar defense early.

‪"#GT is converting third downs well on this drive. ‪#BYU not getting enough pressure on the QB," tweeted @johncoonsports.

That became a storyline of the night considering Georgia Tech went 0-10 on third down conversions in last year's game against BYU.

The Cougar defense eventually got their feet under them and made plays when it counted.

Kyle Van Noy's name wasn't called quite as much as we're use to, but he still had a solid night with two sacks and three tackles for loss.

Van Noy had a solid game with some nasty hits, but most eyes were on Spencer Hadley who returned to the field following a suspension for an honor code violation.

"Love seeing Hadley back," tweeted @beanmace.

"In his return, Hadley has played a pretty good game tonight," tweeted KSL NewsRadio's Jason Shepherd.

"Hadley uses his hands so well to shed blocks. His technique is text book," tweeted @GuntherKFAN. "His stash is magnificent and magnanimous."

Hadley finished with three tackles, a QB hurry and a sack in his return.

While Hadley had a nice return BYU QB Taysom Hill had a solid first half follow-up to his breakout game against Utah State.

"Halftime: BYU up 24-13. Great half from Taysom Hill, 16-20, 226 yds, TD catch," tweeted @jaromjordan.

Hills stats were impressive in the first half, but the offensive output from BYU in the second half was a very different story.

"#BYU offense = US Gov't #shutdown," tweeted co-host of KSL NewsRadio's Cougar Sports Saturday Alex Kirry.

Heading into the fourth quarter BYU had just 33 yards of offense and seemed to go three and out after three and out.

The defense continued to play hard and helped the offense get on the board once again.

"ALANI FUA with the 51yd interception return for a TOUCHDOWN!!!" tweeted @BYUCougars.

Of course, that was the moment the Alani Fua/Kyle Van Noy comparisons began.

"No question on the Prophetic succession after Kyle Van Noy goes the way of the dust. His name is Alani Fua," tweeted @zbloxham.

"Kyle Van Noy said that Alani Fua has the potential to be a better linebacker than him. I chuckled. Now I'm repenting. Don't doubt KVN," tweeted @RobbieBullough.

That pick six seemed to get the offense interested again and the Cougars drove down the field and running back Algernon Brown took it in for a TD from 15-yards out.

"Good for Brown. First TD at ‪#BYU," tweeted @koryaldous.

That would mark the last of the scoring for the Cougars, but the Yellow Jackets would get one more score in before the clock ran out, but it was way too little way too late.

Next up for BYU is Houston on Saturday, October 19 in Texas.
