SALT LAKE CITY — Police tracked down suspects in a violent home invasion robbery thanks to the tracking app on a stolen iPhone. Police now believe the suspects had a connection to one of the people inside the home that was robbed.

Someone living at the house near 1500 East and 1800 South called police about the home invasion robbery around 3 a.m.

Police said three armed suspects entered the home and woke the residents. The intruders roughed up one of the homeowners then proceeded to steal items from the home, including an iPhone.

When the robbers left, the homeowners began tracking the phone and gave its location to police. Dozens of officers then converged on a mobile home park near 1350 S. Major Street.

"We saw some people that matched our suspect descriptions," said Lt. Craig Gleason of the Salt Lake City Police Department. "We spoke to them. They fled. We were able to find out where they were and called them out of the trailer. Now we'll get a warrant."

Police took six people into custody, including three people who matched the description of the robbers. Investigators are waiting for the warrant to go into the mobile home to search for the stolen items.

The homeowner had scrapes and bruises to his face but is expected to be OK. Police believe there is a connection between the suspects and someone living in the home. Officers discovered some marijuana in the garage and said it's possible that is why the robbers targeted that home.
