Former BYU golfer Daniel Summerhays’ first-ever trip to the Masters could’ve started out better, after his family's trip was rained out of Wednesday’s Par 3 Contest at Augusta National Golf Club.

But he rallied well enough in Thursday’s opening round.

Summerhays carded a 2-over-par 74 with three birdies to finish tied for 27th after the first day of the first golf major of the year Thursday in Augusta, Georgia.

The Farmington native and two-time Utah State Amateur winner bogeyed three holes after a birdie on No. 2 as he teed off in the first group of the day. But after making the turn at 38, he carded birdies on the 12th and 14th holes to pull back even before bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17 sank him to 27th place.

His birdie on No. 12 nearly made history. That portion of Amen Corner hasn’t seen a hole-in-one since 1988 — but Summerhays came close Thursday morning.

Fellow BYU alumnus Mike Weir shot 4-over 76 in his opening round. The Canadian golfer who lives in Draper carded three of his four bogeys on the front nine before settling into a birdie-free round.

Charley Hoffman notched four-straight birdies to end the first round with a scintillating 65 for the top spot on the leaderboard. William McGirt is four stroke back, followed by Lee Westwood at 70.

World No. 1 Dustin Johnson withdrew from the tournament after the first hole with a back injury he suffered Wednesday.

Friday’s second round continues on ESPN.
