SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Zion National Park superintendent Jock Whitworth is temporarily suspending usage fees for oversized vehicles using the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel.
Whitworth says the fee suspension begins Tuesday and will continue for up to five weeks. For safety reasons, the $15 fee is normally charged to all vehicles 7 feet, 10 inches wide and/or 11 feet, 4 inches tall or taller.
Whitworth says the suspension is related to a road reconstruction on the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway. He says the project will restrict highway travel to one lane and the fee isn't justified.
The project will start near the tunnel's west portal. Crews will be reconstructing two historic rock retaining walls.
The highway will be closed to all vehicles during the project between Sunday and Thursday evenings.
