UTAH COUNTY -- A raffle to raise money to buy a police dog for the Lone Peak Police Department has been called off after organizers learned raffles are illegal in Utah.

Police in Highland and Alpine are trying to raise $10,000 to buy and train their first drug dog. The raffle was set up with the help of local businesses to raise the money. The winner would get a $1,000 shopping spree.

Since raffles are illegal in Utah, the community now is accepting donations to buy the dog.

Organizers say those who purchased raffle tickets can either consider the purchase a donation, or they can bring their ticket to any Bank of American Fork branch or the Kohler's store at 5353 W. 11000 North in Highland, and receive a full refund.

Donations for the fundraiser are being collected at the same locations. Police say they have raised $3,000 of the $10,000 needed.
