LAYTON — Several residences in a trailer park were evacuated due to a fire in Layton on Tuesday afternoon.

Layton Fire Department Battalion Chief Jason Cook said several homes were threatened by the fire, with four sustaining minor to moderate damage and one being a total loss.

Cook said the blaze started in a grassy field near the Weber State University Davis Campus just before 4 p.m.

Due to the wind, it spread rapidly, prompting authorities to evacuate Ridgewood Estates, a nearby trailer park, Cook said.

About 30 families were evacuated, according to Cook, and were housed at Northridge High School and a clubhouse belonging to Ridgewood Estates.

As of Tuesday night, authorities allowed most residents to return home. Eight homes were without power and remained evacuated due to an electric utility being damaged during the fire. Residents of those homes are expected to return Wednesday morning, Cook said.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
