SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Longtime 3rd District Court Judge Sheila McCleve is retiring.

McCleve has been on the bench for 25 years. McCleve plans to retire in June to teach at the Brigham Young University law school. She also plans several community outreach efforts, including speaking to students and civic groups, to help people better understand the judicial system.

McCleve created the first domestic violence court, which ran for five years. She says she sees her work as an opportunity to have an impact on people's lives.

McCleve has worked as a prosecutor for Salt Lake City and the Salt Lake County district attorney's office. Gov. Scott Matheson appointed her to the bench in 1984.
