(KSL News) About $34 million each year in Salt Lake County tax dollars could soon finance the Mountain View Corridor highway project.
The House overwhelmingly approved the measure yesterday.
The money would fund a $300-million bond to purchase land for the proposed 40-mile highway along the west side of the valley.
It would come from a $10 vehicle registration fee approved last year which would have helped buy land for other road projects and from portions of two recent sales tax increases.
Lawmakers say the bond could help keep Mountain View from being a toll road, which is a funding option for the $2-billion project.
Meanwhile West Valley City leaders are urging lawmakers to look at other options to keep the highway toll-free. They have suggested using the Transportation Investment Fund, which is designated for projects that expand road capacity.
