PROVO, Utah (AP) -- A cutting-edge checkout system at the Provo City Library is making checkout time a snap and eliminating lines.
The $500,000 system uses a radio frequency to read through a stack of books sitting on a scanner. It's a nearly automatic checkout.
In place since October, the high-tech system is similar to those at Utah State University, the University of Utah and library systems in Salt Lake City and county.
Orem City has secured a federal grant to add radio frequency technology.
Besides high-speed checkout, returning books can also be done with ease. Books are automatically scanned as they run down the return chute, automatically updating a patron's computer file.
