OGDEN — A Roy man has been sentenced to home confinement in connection with a hit-and-run accident last year that injured a woman.
Judge Reuben Renstrom on Monday sentenced Michael Lee Mandell, 75, to serve 60 days of home confinement on a count of failure to remain at the scene of an accident causing serious injury, a third-degree felony. The judge also handed down a suspended prison sentence of zero to five years.
As part of plea deal, Mandell pleaded guilty to the felony count on March 17 and another count of failure to operate in a single lane of traffic, an infraction, was dismissed. Prosecutors also agreed to recommend no jail time.
Mandell lost control of his car while driving through a roundabout in Roy on Sept. 23 last year, left the roadway and struck a pedestrian on the adjacent sidewalk, according to a police booking affidavit. The vehicle continued, colliding with a fence and entering a yard before Mandell drove away from the scene.
Roy police later said the victim, a 51-year-old woman, had sustained injuries that weren't life-threatening. Police put out a call for help to the public in locating the driver and Mandell subsequently turned himself in to authorities.
