SALT LAKE CITY — Police and firefighters from all over the valley donned soccer uniforms Saturday for their annual charity soccer game.
Guns n' Hoses is an annual soccer game that pits law enforcement against fire crews to raise money for charities as well as to the families of officers and firemen who have fallen or been injured in the line of duty. This game was meant to help the families of the Ogden police officers shot earlier this year, including Jared Francom, who was killed.
"Anytime we lose one of our brothers or sisters in the line of duty, we know we've got to put money in those trust funds for those kids," said firefighter and Guns n' Hoses creator Jay Stevens. "The father's no longer there to raise money."
And though they're fighting for the same cause, the game was lively. Both goals and misses drew gasps and awes from the crowd watching the two departments play each other. The police officers and the firefighters, or the "guns" and the "hoses certainly didn't take it easy on each other.
"Both teams have been playing very well," said Kamille Tibbits, wife of Hoses team member. "It's a charity game, but they're enjoying themselves."
The Hoses managed to beat the Gun 2 to 1, and took home a 6- foot trophy as a reward. The Gunsreally made the Hoses work for their victory — it was the closest soccer match they've had in years.
