PROVO -- A 75-year-old man survived a cold night in the Rock Canyon area after he got lost while hiking.
According to Provo police, Leon Hurst went hiking toward Slate Canyon alone Friday afternoon. His wife reported him missing around midnight when he didn't return home.
Though Hurst was equipped with food, water and fire-making supplies, officers were concerned about the low temperatures, which reached 34 degrees overnight. Officers found his 2003 Toyota Tundra in the Rock Canyon parking lot and called in Provo's Mountain Rescue Team to help with the search.
Rescuers in a helicopter spotted Hurst around 8 a.m. Saturday on the back side of Y mountain. He was slightly disoriented and was treated for a minor case of hypothermia, but was otherwise OK.
