CONYERS, Ga. — It was an ambush with roses.
Katie Ward had no idea what she was in for when she met up with friends at Glenn's barbeque in Conyers, Georgia Thursday night.
"When I was walking down I was like 'Why is everybody here?'" she said, recalling the scene as she entered the barbecue restaurant. "I thought they were eating Mexican."
Minutes later, she got a note that simply read: "Turn around."
Tech Sgt. Chad Lewis had been away from home and Katie for far too long.
But now, as his girlfriend leaped happily into his arms, his secret mission was just about over: A surprise pulled off with military precision by a warrior with the heart of a poet.
"You are my heart and my soul," he swore to her before their friends and family members. "And you are the love of my life. So with that being said, Katie, will you marry me?"
As Katie exclaimed "Yes!" over and over, the crowd burst into applause.
"Any relationship that can survive something like that can survive anything," Lewis said with his arm around his bride. "It's good to be home."
