COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — More than $1.1 million in federal funding has been awarded 79 Ohio schools and other providers that participate in the National School Lunch Program.

The state's education department says the competitive grants went to eligible schools to help purchase food service equipment, such as ovens, dishwashers, walk-in freezers and serving-line counters. The funds are expected to help schools to serve healthier meals, improve food safety and expand accessibility to food services.

School authorities submitted almost 270 grant applications to the department's Office of Child Nutrition. They requested about $16 million in funding.

Priority was given to schools with limited resources along with those in underserved areas, where more than half of enrolled students are eligible for free or reduced price meals.
