CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Economic development officials say the state needs to start promoting businesses that pay higher wages. The Governor's Office of Economic Development chief Steve says the department has proposed a bill that would limit tax abatements given to companies that pay below Nevada's average wage of $20.63 an hour.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Las Vegas man is pleading guilty to taking money from small businesses seeking government grants, but never getting them their money. The U.S Attorney's office says Mickey Gines bilked 390 small businesses out of $5.3 million dollars. Gines faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 when he's sentenced June 4.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — A 37-year-old Fallon man originally sentenced to death after he was convicted of murdering and stealing $89 from a Reno cab driver in 1997 has now been sentenced to life in prison without parole. Shawn Harte won an appeal before the Nevada Supreme Court blocking his execution, but the high court upheld the conviction and sent the case back to Washoe County for resentencing.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Philippine island province is asking the Nevada Supreme Court to hear a lawsuit against a gold mining company, An attorney for the Province of Marinduque (mar-in-DOO'-kay) claims damage from a 1996 mining disaster. In 2010, a Clark County judge ruled that the suit against Barrick Gold should be heard in Canada because only a Barrick subsidiary does business in Nevada.
