DRAPER -- The Draper Driver License Division office opened its doors on Friday morning for the first time since the start of the state four-day workweek. Other offices will soon be open on Fridays as well.

Three-hour waits at driver license offices around the Salt Lake Valley prompted the state to reopen the Draper office on Fridays. Those who showed up for the first several hours were pleasantly surprised by the short lines.

"My wife brought my son two days ago and she was here at least an hour," said Lex White. "I just walked in and walked out in 10 minutes."

Dienna Ramirez had a similar experience. "Got a number, walked in and was done in 15 minutes," she said. "It's nice that it's open on Fridays."

It's unclear if the wait times at the Draper office will remain this short once more people realize the office is no longer open just four days a week. The spokeswoman for Gov. Gary Herbert says their goal is to get all the offices down to a waiting time of around 20 minutes.

To accomplish this, the Driver License Division in West Valley City will be open on Fridays, starting March 5. The Salt Lake Fairpark office will follow suit later in March.

Long lines to renew licenses have been the result of a new law that requires people to go in and renew their license in person and show a birth certificate to prove their citizenship.
