(KSL News) -- Utah's Ute Indian tribe could help the University of Utah keep its team names.
The NCAA said today approval from Native American tribes would be a primary factor in deciding appeals from schools that use Native American nicknames and mascots.
A couple weeks ago the NCAA announced it would ban the use of symbols and nicknames, like "Utes" or "Seminoles" in tournaments next year. At least 18 schools face sanctions.
The first review is scheduled for next week.
