SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah Gov. Gary Herbert's acceptance of a corporate campaign donation is drawing criticism from the sponsors of a citizens ethics initiative.
Herbert has taken heat for accepting a $10,000 campaign donation from a coal company that got a fast-track decision from state regulators on a strip mine.
The Peoples Right LLC said Friday that while some may say the donation was bad timing, the reality is that Utah is a pay-to-play state. It's an assertion Herbert's office has denied.
The Peoples Right is sponsoring an initiative that would ban corporate donations and set campaign contribution limits. Herbert has said he's opposed to limiting campaign contributions.
