SANDY -- A Sandy man who admitted he killed a baby he was babysitting learned his fate.

Jared Billette, 23, pleaded guilty in January to child abuse homicide in the death of 9-month-old Milo Doxey in October.

On Wednesday a judge sentenced Billette five years to life in prison. He also must pay $7,000 for counseling for the baby's mother.

In initial police interviews, all Billette would say was he didn't know what happened. Later in court, however, he said he was swinging Milo around when the baby's head hit a hard surface.

At the time of Billette's arrest, Sandy Police Sgt. Justin Chapman said the baby's injury was "consistent with shaken baby and rapid deceleration -- meaning if a person moved at a high speed or a high velocity and suddenly stopped, that would be the cause of damage to the brain."

The baby was flown to Primary Children's Medical Center. He died from his injuries the following night.
