SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah's state bird is the seagull. A ceiling mural in the Utah State Capitol Rotunda depicts seagulls saving the crops of early Mormon pioneers by eating crickets that were devouring their fields.
Monday night, Utah saw a different seagull art display by third-generation American artist Jamie Wyeth -- son of Andrew Wyeth and grandson of N.C. Wyeth.
The piece of artwork is based on the seven deadly sins:
- Anger
- Sloth
- Pride
- Lust
- Gluttony
- Greed
- Envy
At first, Andrew Wyeth wondered why Utah would be interested in Maine Seagulls.
"I stand corrected," he said. "Seagulls are very important, as you all know the history of Utah."
Wyeth's seagulls will be on display at the Salt Lake Art Center from Wednesday, Jan. 27, through May 22.
