All right you word nerds, I have a question for you: what does the word ‘milieu' mean? Webster's Dictionary defines the word as 'surroundings or environment.'

But to Andrea McCulloch, milieu means so much more than that. Milieu Design is the name of Andrea's interior design business, and she does her best to make her clients' environments as interesting and beautiful as possible.

Amy Thomas, Milieu Design sales manager, tells me Andrea has a gift for looking at a space and immediately immediately envisioning what it could become. Some of her major projects in Logan, where her business is located, include the Axtell Taylor car dealership, Mountain Medical Lodge, Casper's Malt Shoppe and the complete remodel of the former Deseret Industries building into the new Blackstone restaurant.

Andrea's design career began a short time after she graduated from Ricks College and moved to Logan with a friend. She worked in a hardware store managing the kitchen and bath department, designing cabinetry and millwork. Feeling overwhelmed with creative energy, Andrea decided to leave the hardware store to open her own interior design firm.

In October 1996, with only one client, Andrea started Milieu Design in the basement of her home. Her first projects involved high-end residential remodels and later expanded to include medical, office and retail spaces. Finding furniture to complement her designs was difficult so Andrea created her own furniture line, which now boasts more than 150 pieces.

In August 2006, Andrea purchased a 100-year old train depot on 600 West. After an extensive two-year renovation, Andrea opened her new offices in Feb. 2008. She hopes the former depot can eventually become a cultural landmark for the Cache Valley.

Andrea feels fortunate she can go to work every day and love what she does. And in Milieu Design's new offices, she says it's difficult not to feel creative.
