SALT LAKE CITY -- Thousands of University of Utah employees who normally get paid on Thursdays did not because of a direct deposit error. Most will have to wait until Friday to receive their paycheck. This affects employees of the school and the medical center.

There was apparently a problem with the direct deposit transfer that was supposed to happen Wednesday night. The university did not want to talk on camera, but the payroll department sent an e-mail to employees stating:

"The Direct Deposit file for the pay period ending 12-31-09 to be paid today 01-7-10 was not received by Wells Fargo and therefore, was not processed in time for today's payroll.....Thank you for your patience."
KSL received many calls from upset employees. Many said this was a big deal because they live paycheck to paycheck.

University employee Wendy Woodfin said, "I always have a list of bills to pay by a certain time, so I was actually planning later today to go online and pay my bills online. So usually when I get my check, it's already gone."

The university says Wells Fargo is currently processing the file and Wells Fargo bankers should have their pay by Thursday evening.

As for those who bank with other local institutions, those funds might post Thursday, but won't be available for use until Friday.

The university says it is in touch with local banks and working with employees who may have automatic bill pay and insufficient funds to pay those bills.

Some employees aren't as worried but can understand the frustration.

University employee Kim Walker says, "Absolutely, mortgages are due. People have to meet deadlines, so I can see that would be a big problem."

The university said it is working hard to fix the problem. It also called the payroll hold-up for thousands of employees a non-issue.
