With one-point-five (M)million dollars, reserachers at the University of Utah are studying urban air pollution.

More than two dozen researchers and students -- from meteorologists and geologists to psychologists -- will conduct the study. They will create a computer simulation to help government officials test possible ways of cleaning the air.

The project will go beyond just vehicle exhaust and smokestacks to include a wide range of factors, such as sprawl, weather, government policies, commuter psychology and pollutants from gas stations, industrial solvents and vegetation.
