SALT LAKE VALLEY -- Fog and cold temperatures created icy conditions and caused multiple car crashes early Monday morning. Utah Highway Patrol troopers say they saw about 25 wrecks, mostly on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley.
Three cars collided around 6 a.m. on I-80 at I-215.
UHP's Sgt. Randall Akers explained, "The structure here is frozen over. Everything here on the north end froze up this morning. We've had several of these, but what set this one up was a three-vehicle crash where a truck started to lose control, another vehicle hit him and then another vehicle hit the side of that vehicle."
In another incident, a car near the south interchange started spinning and hit another car, which caught fire. More water covered the road as firefighters extinguished the flames.
The Utah Highway Patrol encourages motorists to slow down, especially on bridges and on-ramps which get the iciest.
"Any time we have the fog settle in and temperatures low, it has a tendency to mix for an icy condition," Akers said.
