FINAL Fourth Quarter
(14) BYU 44, (18) Oregon St. 20

What a statement game for BYU! This was a very athletic Pac-10 team that the Cougars simply beat like a drum. The BYU defense gets a lot of credit making huge plays when they counted. Matt Bauman's fumble return for a touchdown set the tone for the rest of the game. Say what you want about the Beavers' motivation coming off a heartbreaking loss to Oregon, but Oregon State looked like it wanted this game in the first half. The difference was the Cougar defense and a few balls that went BYU's way. This will be a feather in the Mountain West Conference's cap and a game for the Cougars to build on next season with a cast of new characters at key positions.

Big turnover on the fumble. The Cougars with a golden opportunity to put 7 more on the board and basically call this game a wrap. After a bit of a strugle early the defense played almost a perfect game since....One play and done! Manase Tonga into the endzone. 37-7!

8:51 Third Quarter

A great 17 yd touchdown catch by Dennis Pitta from Max Hall. Hall was hit hard and hit with a grounding penalty the previous play and converts to make yet another connection with Pitta on the year. 8 TD passes from Hall to Pitta this year.

The Cougars play a solid first half of football. The defense was very good making plays and putting 7 points on the board. The offense was "balanced" just the way Bronco wants it to be. The Beavers get the ball to start the second half and are not able to do anything. A fake on 4th down but the Oregon State player trips on the fake or he probably gets the first down. The Cougars now at the Oregon State 32 yard line to start their opening drive of the second half. Hall, Unga and Pitta make the plays and the Cougars punch it in..........

The wind playing a big factor here and the Cougars seemed to have figured out how to play with that wind. The Beavers are running the ball well but drives are being stalled and poor punts into the aforementioned wind have given the Cougars great field position. The Cougs just need to keep the Beavers out of sync in the third quarter since they will get the wind back in their favor in the fourth quarter.

This drive has been fueled by a few penalties, but also a couple of 3rd down conversions have been critical. The offense is sharp with a good mix of the run and pass. Max Hall looks steady and composed. Harvey is making good decisions. A long steady drive results in a 28 yd FG

Since our last blog, the BYU defense made a very heads-up play. OSU's Sean Canfield tossed the ball back to Quizz Rodgers. It looked like a pass, but it was ruled on review as a backward pass. Matt Bauman scooped up the ball and ran it back for a touchdown. He had plenty of blocking from the other Cougar defenders. That put BYU up 14-7. BYU's defense has made a number of plays so far. That's a good thing for Cougar fans. Oregon State obviously has a very formidable offense. Just before the end of the first quarter, BYU lucked out. O'Neill Chambers fumbled a punt and Oregon State recovered it at the 1 yard line. A holding call on the Beavers called the play back and the subsequent punt resulted in a touchback.

A Matt Bauman 35-yd fumble recovery (lateral) for a touchdown could turn out to be the play of the game for the Cougars. Turnover and a score all in one makes it hard to stay focused. This wind has already been a factor.

BYU just completed a mammoth drive. It was something like 14 plays and 84 yards. It took just about six minutes off the clock. Credit Robert Anae for sticking with the ground game, even though it hasn't been entirely effective at this point. Manase Tonga had a nice burst. Harvey Unga scored the touchdown off tackle left. Max Hall started the game slow, but has now completed several passes in a row. That's quite an accomplishment because the wind is strong -- 15 to 42 mph. When BYU kicked the extra point, it started slightly left and blew right. It was good.

Two very balanced teams looking for some national attention in Las Vegas...BYU #14 and Oregon State #18. OSU had a great shot at the Rose Bowl, but just lost to Oregon sending them to the Vegas Bowl. This is the best team BYU has played in the Vegas Bowl. This one should be very even. If BYU can stop the run they will prevail, if OSU stops the BYU pass game they win it!
