SOUTH SALT LAKE -- A teenager who accidentally shot himself during a scuffle with a Utah Highway Patrol trooper has died.
Last month, a highway patrolman pulled over a group of six teenagers on State Street in South Salt Lake. The trooper smelled marijuana and asked the passengers to get out of the truck. That's when 17-year-old Ashton Cummings tried to run, and the trooper grabbed him.
During the struggle, a gun Cummings was holding went off. The bullet hit the teen in the head.
The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office says because the gunshot was determined to be self-inflicted, and the boy died, the investigation is closed.
