(KSL News) -- The wife of the man who was falsely accused for kidnapping Elizabeth Smart filed a lawsuit this afternoon against members of the Salt Lake City Police Department.

Angela Ricci is suing for emotional distress for the focus the department put on her husband, Richard Ricci, in the Smart investigation.

Bruce Oliver, Angela Ricci's Attorney: "What we're claiming in the suit is that Richard Ricci was wrongfully accused of the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart. He never was involved and never was a viable suspect. We believe that all of the focus the Salt Lake police department placed upon Richard Ricci was done with their knowledge that indeed, he was not a viable suspect."

The suit also claims that the Department of Corrections was negligent in taking away Richard Ricci's hypertention medication, even though they knew he had high blood pressure.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.
