SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah Attorney General's Office is appealing a judge's decision to throw out charges against a teenager accused of hiring a man to beat her up so she would miscarry her baby.
According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the judge called the then 17-year-old girl's actions "shocking" and "crude" but said they fit the definition of an abortion.
The girl told police she hired 21-year-old Arron Harrison to beat her up after her boyfriend threatened to break up with her if she didn't terminate the pregnancy.
Harrison was sentenced to prison for up to 20 years.
The girl gave birth to her child in August.
Lawmakers are now considering a bill that could clear the way for the prosecution of women who seek illegal abortions.
