LEHI — A man police say was critically injured after being knocked out during a fight resulting from a road rage confrontation has been taken off life support.
A family spokesman has confirmed Michael Alden Brown, 38, of Eagle Mountain, was pronounced dead Monday afternoon. A GoFundMe* campaign has been set up to help support Brown's wife and two sons, who are age 10 and 8.
"Michael Brown was brutally killed while his two young children watched in horror. There is currently an ongoing police investigation," the fundraiser states. "Mike suffered a traumatic brain injury and was (taken by helicopter) to the hospital. Despite emergency surgery and the doctors' best efforts, they could not save his life.
"Both his children witnessed this horrific scene. Now, his beautiful wife, Mandi, is left to pick up the pieces and try to make sense of this senseless act."
There was an altercation between Brown and John Jeffrey Williams, 43, of Highland, about 1:40 p.m. on Monday that started as both were driving on Main Street in Lehi near 1300 West, according to Lehi police.
"According to witnesses, the road rage began over (Brown) cutting off and brake checking (Williams) as they traveled eastbound. (Williams) followed (Brown) into a neighborhood where both drivers exited their vehicles and a physical confrontation ensued," according to a statement from police.
"Both parties exchanged a few punches," according to a police booking affidavit. "The victim sustained a hit to the head, causing (him) to go unconscious and fall onto the roadway. No physical injuries were found on Mr. Williams."
Both of Brown's sons were in the car at the time and saw their father get hit, according to the family.
Williams was arrested and booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault resulting in serious injury. The Utah County Attorney's Office may consider filing other criminal charges in light of Brown's death.
Anyone with additional information about the confrontation is asked to call police at 385-201-1005.
Because of the incident, Lehi police are "reminding all drivers to remain calm and composed on the roads. Aggressive driving and road rage can lead to dangerous and potentially deadly outcomes." The department said it will be increasing patrols and monitoring, hoping to prevent other road rage incidents.
