SANDY -- Investigators are trying to figure out what started a basement fire in a vacant home in Sandy.
Firefighters say some neighbors were concerned about smoke coming from a home near 8900 South and State Street around midnight and flagged down a Sandy police officer. The officer walked around and didn't see anything but called firefighters anyway.
Capt. Toby Kerby of the Sandy City Fire Department said, "It looked like we had some smoke coming out of the chimney is all. We went down and opened the door downstairs and did have active fire in the basement."
Firefighters knocked down the flames quickly.
The home sustained about $20,000 in damage.
